In Celebration of R.W. Fassbinder’s 80th Anniversary (1945–2025)
In collaboration with Sicilia Queer Filmfest
Behind the scenes of a TV remake of Fassbinder’s The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, Vera, the director, is searching for the perfect actress for the lead role. However, the production turns into a nightmare due to her insecurities and tensions between the cast and crew. At the heart of the story is Gerwin, an actor playing a secondary role, dreaming of a chance to emerge.
An acute satire of the film industry, the film explores power dynamics, frustrations, ambitions, and illusions of success, shedding light on the human frailties hidden behind the spectacle.
La Deutsche Vita: A Journey Through German Cinema
This year, the film series celebrates the 80th anniversary of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, a pioneer of New German Cinema. His fearless storytelling exposed societal hypocrisy, power dynamics, and human contradictions. A tribute screening of Mother Küsters Goes to Heaven highlights themes of class, family, and postwar struggles. The program also explores memory, war, justice, and women’s roles, with motherhood symbolizing resilience amid today’s crises.
