1947. On a beach in Normandy, Madeleine, a hotel-restaurant waitress and single mother, meets François, a wealthy and cultured student. They seem destined for one another. While it becomes clear what she wishes to leave behind by following this young man, over time we discover what François is trying to escape as he intertwines his fate with Madeleine’s.

After adapting Maylis de Kerangal’s novel Réparer les vivants in 2016, the director of Un poison violent (2010) and Suzanne (2013) returns with her fourth feature film. Quillévéré presents a unique postwar love story, dissecting the dynamics of a couple without judgment. Inspired by Douglas Sirk’s melodramas but filmed with a contemporary eye and handheld camera, the movie explores the evolution of a family that was ahead of its time.

Set against the backdrop of postwar France through to the 1960s, the film offers a poignant portrayal of a nation still bound by strict social conventions.
